This entry presents an innovative geospatial analytics pipeline transforming how real-time water quality monitoring, investigation and decision-making are delivered across river catchments. By combining automated analytics, cloud-based visualisation and autonomous survey technology, it provides a powerful end-to-end approach to understanding river health.
The process begins with continuous, automated event detection, analysing live in-river data to identify pollution signals, rainfall responses and sensor anomalies in real time. This enables rapid identification of emerging issues, ensuring risks are highlighted as they occur rather than retrospectively.
Once triggered, the pipeline leverages the Streamline platform, a highly intuitive, web-based geospatial interface integrating datasets including sewer overflows, discharge permits, land use, landfill sites, rainfall, pollution incidents and river networks. This layered approach enables rapid understanding of sources, pathways and impacts.
For deeper insight, the Surfbee autonomous survey vehicle delivers high-resolution spatial mapping of water quality and flow. Outputs are visualised as interpolated maps within Streamline, revealing mixing behaviour, plume dispersion and cross-channel variability. This is critical for CWQM sonde siting, providing robust evidence to optimise locations based on actual mixing conditions and challenge standard Section 82 “10 x river width” guidance.
Surfbee enables mixing studies in both high and low flows while capturing flow depth simultaneously. It also supports pollution response, mis-connection investigations and hotspot identification, with an onboard POV camera enabling outfall inspection and safe operation in complex environments.
